Octane Fitness Standing Elliptical XT3700 Review (Updated in 2021)

Octane XT3700 Overview

The Octane Fitness XT3700 elliptical machine belongs to the company’s elite line of standing commercial elliptical series namely; Lateral X, XT-one, XT4700, XT3700, Pro3700 classic, and Pro310. The XT3700 is the third elliptical trainer among the line-up. It is a premium commercial grade-elliptical that is built to deliver a super smooth, highly effective and ultra-comfortable elliptical workout. While it is specifically designated for commercial use in health clubs and fitness facilities, the XT3700 elliptical trainer can also double as a home-grade elliptical machine. Like the vast majority of Octane ellipticals, the XT3700 is built around precise human biomechanics to convey a smooth and impact-free motion. It is also packed with a bunch of exciting workout programs and several comfort amenities that provide a quality and positive workout experience.

Following the market success of its predecessor, the PR3700 classic, Octane Fitness decided to make an upgraded version of the said elliptical trainer. This birthed the launch of the XT3700 elliptical trainer. As expected, the upgraded XT3700 elliptical trainer outcompeted the older Pro3700 model. It incorporated newer and better features such as close pedal spacing, low step-up height, transport wheels, a tablet/ reading rack on the smart console, a water bottle holder, USB charging port, C-SAFE, 3-Speed console fan and wireless heart rate compatibility with both Polar and ANT+. Best of all, it came with two console options, the smart and the standard console.

Considering the myriad of new features, this was no small upgrade. Except for having more workout programs (mostly, the heart-rate controlled programs) on the standard console, the Pro3700 elliptical hardly measures up to the more advanced XT3700 elliptical trainer. The XT3700 set the path (in the invention) for the higher-end models in the series; the Lateral X, XT-one and the XT4700 elliptical trainers. Other key features of the XT3700 elliptical trainer include a 24 inches stride length, multi-grip handlebars, wireless heart rate monitoring, forward/reverse pedalling and a 10″ touch screen smart console with internet connectivity. This XT3700 review is about to showcase the incredible elliptical trainer in its entirety!

Octane Fitness manufactures ellipticals based on quality and reliability standards for long-lasting performance and machine durability. In line with this, the XT3700 elliptical trainer was subjected to rigorous testing and uncompromising standards before being released into the market. Hence, the XT3700 trainer is sturdy and stable enough to support a bulky weight and performance load. Specifically, it can support a maximum weight capacity of up to 400Ibs without detracting from its quality. This makes maintaining and owning the machine as easy as can be.

While most elliptical machines and treadmills have a large footprint, the XT3700 elliptical’s footprint is the exception to the rule. Its average footprint measures 33 inches in width and 77 inches in length (84 × 196 cm) while in a live area, it measures 37 inches in width and 86 inches in length (94 × 218 cm). Thus, it is space-efficient. Furthermore, it has a low step-up height with easy access; users can step on and off the machine easily and safely. And when it comes to ceiling clearance, it has a clean slate too. Octane recommends a standard 8 inches minimum ceiling requirement for the X3700 elliptical, making it eligible for areas with low ceilings and exercisers of all heights.

Talking about the power requirements of the XT3700 elliptical machine, the trainer gives users the best of both worlds; cordless and plugin. However, you have to choose one. In the event you want to cut cost on power bill ─ truth be told, gyms and fitness facilities tend to consume lots of power, you can opt for the X3700 standard console which runs on batteries. But if you have no qualms about using a power source to operate the elliptical, the XT3700 smart console is perfect. Plus, the trainer is a bit on the heavy side, heavier than the Pro3700 to be precise. But the good news is, transport wheels are included to make the weight easy to handle. And no, the XT3700 elliptical trainer does not integrate a fold-up design.

The XT3700 elliptical trainer is available with a smart or standard console. The XT3700 smart console is nothing short of superb and multi-functional. With the smart console, you can offer your club members and clients an exciting platter of workout entertainment and motivation. Users can browse the web, access several applications, and benefit from video coaching ─ all of which serve to spice up workouts and achieve viable fitness results. It is also fully equipped with 17 interactive workout programs that cut across fitness boosters, 30:30 interval, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Octane’s prized cross circuit coaching.

The XT3700 standard console integrates many features to improve workout quality. It sports a large LCD that provides important workout data and instructions to enhance performance. It is also fitted with a 3-speed cooling fan to combat hot weather, an accessory tray for mobile and electronic devices, pre-programmed keypad buttons for a quick start, and C-SAFE input for intra-club networking. Post-workout, the LCD gives workout summary information on time spent, calories burned, distance covered, heart rate percentage, heart rate in beats per minute and resistance level. However, it has fewer workout programs and lacks internet connectivity.

Octane’s trademark workout boosters that aim to motivate, challenge and drive positive results are featured on both the standard and smart consoles. These workout boosters; X-mode, Arm Blaster and Gpower, can be used for high-intensity interval training (HIIT). X-mode trains the arms, the chest, the biceps and the triceps. Arm Blaster is designed to strengthen cardiovascular endurance while building strength and muscle tone while Glute Power challenges the quads and the glutes. The XT3700 consoles also incorporate wireless heart rate monitoring via Polar or ANT+ and USB charging for mobile devices.

Designed to simulate real human motion, the XT3700 elliptical trainer is a zero-impact trainer in every ramification. The 24 inches stride integrates two settings; walking and running that are realistic and highly-effective. But sorry to burst your bubble, the XT3700 stride is not power-adjustable, and neither does it integrate an incline. Also, Octane’s signature smart stride technology is painfully absent on this elliptical.

The smart stride technology allows users to automatically adjust their stride and keep tabs on their stride length and height ─ which helps to enhance the impact-free function and promote good posture. Perhaps, at the time of producing the XT3700 elliptical, the inventors hadn’t yet keyed into the smart stride technology; Only Octane can tell. The stride length may also be a bit limited for tall individuals. And for users who adore an incline-integrated elliptical, this trainer might disappoint. On the plus side, the delivery and flow are as smooth and silk, not to mention friction-free!

What it lacks in stride and incline, it makes up for in resistance ─ that is the beauty of the XT3700 elliptical machine. It boasts 30 resistance levels that are suitable for any-intensity exercise. Whether high, moderate, or low intensity, the XT3700 resistance fits the bill. With the different resistance levels, users can burn calories at a fast rate and enhance their endurance ability. The resistance can be regulated via the console or through web applications. The (+) sign on the button labelled “level” increases the resistance while the (-) sign decreases the resistance. Furthermore, you can alter the resistance to meet targeted heart rates for heart rate-controlled programs. Additionally, the console allows you to save the targeted heart rate.

A key part of the XT3700 mechanical configuration and design are the handlebars and pedals. Octane ellipticals are famous for their unique multi-grip and converging path handlebars ─ which is featured on the XT3700 elliptical machine. The purpose of the multi-grip configuration is to draw attention to the upper body, which is often ignored on regular ellipticals. With the multi-grip handlebars, users can alternate grip positions to exercise the muscles of the arms, back and chest.

Where its sibling ellipticals, the XT4700 and XT-one elliptical machines have digital contact heart rate sensors on the moving handlebars, the XT3700’s pulse sensors are integrated into the stationary handlebars. Regardless of their position, the digital contact heart rate sensors are essential for recording heart rate data. Regrettably, the XT3700 handlebars lack fingertip controls on the handlebars for adjusting stride, resistance and incline ─ If you take into account the lack of incline and a power-adjustable stride, this is fairly reasonable. On the other hand, the XT3700 converging path handlebars swing along with the natural motion of the arms to deliver comfort that is second to none.

What is a zero-impact elliptical trainer without the right pedal articulation? Nothing! The XT3700 pedals bear testament to its zero-gravity reputation. The pedals are only a few inches apart from each other, which creates the perfect balance between the head and toes during exercise. Therefore, users can exercise without a backache or any posture-influenced pain. Now, this is thoughtful! And to think that the pedals are mounted on a rock-solid ball bearing system ─ durability is a long time from now and stability is a step away from the XT3700 pedals.

Being the newer version of the Pro3000 classic elliptical, the XT3700 elliptical machine comes with several useful accessories. This includes a water bottle holder, device shelf, an add-on TV screen, sidestep platforms, tablet/reading rack (smart console) and wireless 900 MHz audio receiver. To tap into their maximum workout potential, exercises need to stay hydrated; this is why the water bottle holder is a handy accessory. With the device shelf, club members don’t have to worry about the safety of their phones and other electronic devices when they workout.

An LG TV with a 15.6 touch screen is also part of the package. You can buy the TV separately and attach to either the smart or the standard console. Users can also benefit from the platter of TV and movie selections it offers. With the smart console, you get an extra tablet/reading rack that will keep avid readers glued to the machine and the club. An audio receiver with a 900 MHz frequency is also included for optimum audio entertainment. The side step platforms are a great addition for enhanced upper body training; users can quickly and safely dislodge their feet from the moving pedals and use the moving handlebars only.

The assembly of the XT3700 elliptical is somewhat complex. But not to worry, a detailed instruction guide is provided to facilitate the set-up. Octane delivers the base pre-assembled, so you are left (to fix ) with the pedals, left and right side shrouds, frame end covers, left and right moving handlebars and their covers, front shroud, device tray, mast boot, console mast and the console. Tools you will be working with include; a 6mm hex wrench (which is included in the box), two 13mm wrench, a 17mm wrench, a #2 Phillips screwdriver and scissors or cutting tool. Also, be prepared to spare about an hour or two for the overall set up. Additionally, the add-ons (if purchased) also need to be installed. Finally, two or more people are recommended for its assembly.

The Octane XT3700 elliptical trainer is sold with Octane’s limited commercial warranty that covers the following; lifetime for frame, three years for parts (including the PVS) and 365 days for labour. Octane assures buyers that the product is free from defects in quality and material, so the warranty is simply a shield against potential “mishap”. The warranty is activated from the original date of purchase to the specified period therein, provided that it is registered.

You are sure to find a warranty registration card in the product box. Fill the details and return the card to Octane Fitness and your warranty is registered! Different retailers sell the Octane XT3700 at different price points. With the standard console, it sells for $5999- $6000 on average. The smart console and other add-on accessories attract extra charges. The smart console may cost about $1000 tops in addition to the asking price. The PVS costs about $1000, while the side step platforms retail at about $296. The actual price is not specified on the Octane website; instead, buyers are directed to request a quote for the product. It is best to buy directly from the Octane website or from a reputable fitness store to avoid falling prey to counterfeit schemes. The XT-3700 is delivered to your location for a quote. However, Octane only ships to locations within the 50 states of the U.S. So if you are buying from outside the selected regions, you might have to make your shipping arrangements.

The Octane Fitness XT3700 elliptical trainer is a top pick for health-clubs, gyms and fitness facilities. It epitomizes exceptional performance and ease of ownership through build quality, firmware updates and asset management. Providing premium entertainment merged with well-detailed workout training, it is poised to become your members’ favorite exercise machine. It is also ideal for beginners, intermediates, and advanced users. With a 400-pound maximum user weight capacity and rock-solid construction, it can sustain both heavy and lightweight users without any damage. But to be honest, it is a little overpriced even for a luxury elliptical. There are other elliptical trainers on the market with the same specifications but at a lower price. While the features on the XT3700 elliptical trainer are as excellent as they come, it is still imperfect. For instance, the fixed 24 inches stride can leave shorter trainees at a loss. So if you want an all-inclusive elliptical that can accommodate varying leg lengths, you should focus your attention on the Octane XT4700 elliptical trainer. Besides having an auto adjustable stride length of 20 to 24 inches, it also has the same features (and more) as the XT3700 elliptical. But be warned, this will cost a few thousand dollars more!

Fitness equipment tips, guides, reviews, and comparisons on this website are my opinion (and opinions of my fitness expert colleagues) based on tens of criteria. I never accept payment to write reviews of products or say positive things about fitness equipment products.
