Octane Fitness Recumbent Elliptical XR6 Review (Updated in 2021)

Octane XR6 Overview
Using an elliptical machine shouldn’t be burdensome, and that is exactly what Octane proved with its Xride recumbent elliptical series. Ellipticals are great and all that, but not everyone can withstand the aches and sores that come with working out on an exercise machine whose original aim was to help you stay fit and invigorated. Aches and sores post-exercise are the worst, and it is even made more so when you realize your regular home gym machine is the mastermind behind your discomfort. But with a recumbent elliptical machine like the Octane XR6 cross trainer, that unpleasant sensation is as good as gone!
Consistently praised and celebrated by fitness publications like fitness professor, the Octane XR6 elliptical cross trainer is Octane’s top-of-the-line, debut recumbent elliptical machine amongst the XR6 classic, xR6000, and xR650 models. But what in the world is a recumbent elliptical? Simply put, It is the fancy name for a seated elliptical; It is a cross between an elliptical trainer and a recumbent exercise bike. And more importantly, it takes the pressure off your lower back to ensure a sore-free ride. The XR6 cross trainer, in particular, combines first-rate ergonomics with state-of-the-art technology to yield highly productive and super comfortable workouts. Needless to say, it is the best of both worlds – comfortable and result-driven!
The XR6 cross trainer is fitted with a streamlined high-backed seat with multiple height and tilt adjustments for much-needed support and convenience. Particularly notable is its power stroke technology feature, which promotes maximum leg extension that invariably leads to 23% more calorie burn and 3x muscles being activated than a regular recumbent exercise machine. It is also equipped with a wide range of features, programs, and resistance levels to add more value to workouts. Also, it is the only model among the lineup that offers smart link compatibility — owing to its dual-console option. Topped with multi-grip handlebars, pulse grip heart rate sensors, and workout boosters, this elliptical will redefine your workouts. Read our XR6 review to find out more!

OCTANE FITNESS XR6 REVIEW AND SPECS:
For an exercise machine that is engineered for home use, the XR6 cross trainer packs a lot of sturdiness; it is built to commercial standards. This beast of a machine is mostly steel-made, which adds surplus points to its overall durability and sturdiness. Conforming to this, it can easily support a maximum user weight capacity of 300 Ibs (136 kg) – Not bad for a recumbent elliptical machine. It comes as no surprise that the XR6 features a step-through design; this is the hallmark of most recumbent ellipticals. The step-through design makes for easier accessibility to the seat. It also helps that the bottom of the seat is strengthened with a metallic plate for increased safety and stability.
Dimension-wise, the XR6 cross trainer is pretty large; in fact, it is larger than most home-grade recumbent ellipticals. When fully assembled, it consumes an active area of approximately 35″ W × 71″ L (89 × 181 cm) and sits at 56″ high. That being said, a workout area of at least 80″ × 90″ is recommended for unhindered usage and access. Talking about the operational mode, the XR6 cross trainer is anything but self-powered. Simply put, you need a power circuit or source to operate this machine as opposed to using batteries.
Because this machine is loaded with “steel,” it makes sense that it is significantly heavy. The XR6 ‘s weight is a whopping 244 pounds (110.7 kg). In as much as we’d like to brand its weight a “let-down,” it contributes substantially to the machine’s overall stability. Plus, it is equipped with two adjustable stabilizers at its rear base to enhance this function. The only concern will be its mobility (considering the weight and non-foldable frame). However, the integrated transport wheels and lifting handle tackles this easily; a set of rollers is incorporated into its front base while a carrying handle is conveniently positioned behind the seat for effortless mobility and relocation.
OCTANE XR6 RECUMBENT ELLIPTICAL MONITOR
What’s better than one console? Two consoles!! To meet different user requirements, the octane XR6 comes with two console options; a standard and a smart console that is denoted by models, x and xi, respectively. Both models are loaded with elite pre-programmed workouts, Octane’s branded workout boosters, and a smartlight light bar. All these features come together to make your workout equal parts challenging and fulfilling. What set the two models apart are SmartLink connectivity, wireless heart rate control, and a few extra features. To begin with, the XR6x model is configured with 6 workout programs while the xi has 9.
The XR6x model features a large, premium LCD display screen that synchronously shows all your training statistics following a prompt. It displays workout parameters such as time, total calories burned, distance covered, speed in revolutions per minute (RPM), heart rate percentage, heart rate in beats per minute (BPM), and resistance level. Essentially, it serves as your guide and motivator as you ride your way to optimal fitness. It is also fitted out with a one-color smartlight bar; this plays the role of an intensity meter on both the smart (multi-colored) and standard consoles. The colors indicate resistance and speed intensity — Wheather high or low.
The XR6xi, on the other hand, is a souped-up version of its sister-console. It features additional workout programs and options via Octane’s patented SmartLink app. Precisely, it offers 9 lose weight, 11 feel better, 4 tone up, and 10 athletic performance programs in addition to the 9 pre-set workout programs. Additionally, the app allows you to customize workout programs tailored to your regimen. It is also compatible with Bluetooth (4.0) and polar / ANT+ wireless heart rate transmission. Both consoles are further equipped with performance boosters; X-mode, leg press, and chest press — to drive better workout results.
OCTANE XR6 STRIDE AND INCLINE
The XR6 recumbent elliptical is truly one-of-a-kind, what with the PowerStroke technology that sets it apart from every other elliptical. The PowerStroke technology refers to the distinctive 16” foot path that permits optimal leg extension and power drive, hence fully engaging the muscles to the maximum. In actual fact, studies have demonstrated that Xride users exhibit 343% more activity in their glutes, 23% more calorie burn, and 22% more mechanical power than those using a recumbent bike at the same pace and application level — talk about revolutionary!
Furthermore, the elliptical path features a “forward” incline to promote more glute activity. The Octane XR6 operates a magnetic resistance system. The major component of its resistance system is a balanced internal flywheel. Although the weight of the flywheel is not specified, it delivers an extremely smooth and consistent motion through the duration of exercise. Another key component of the resistance system is the low-maintenance, heavy-duty transmission belt, that magnifies traction. Basically, you are certain to ride smoothly and in absolute silence.
With 20 resistance levels, every user will be sufficiently satisfied — regardless of competency level. The resistance is designed to cater for both “newbies” and expert users. The figures (1-20) range from light to medium to high resistance intensity, so you can choose the range that best appeals to your fitness needs. The resistance is console-operated; you can decrease or increase resistance by clicking the “level” (with up/down arrows) on the console. Similarly, some of the on-board programs can automatically adjust resistance when being used.
SEAT, HANDLEBAR, AND PEDALS
The principle behind recumbent elliptical machines revolves around “sitting” and “comfort.” And what better way to reinforce this than with an ergonomically structured seat! This is absolutely true of the XR6 cross-trainer. The upholstered seat is positioned at a 45-degree angle — which serves to expose the hip flexors and torso to optimum comfort and correct posture. This configuration also protects your lower back from pain-inducing pressure. To promote more comfort, the contoured surface of the backrest and seat conforms perfectly to the body’s anatomy.
But the star of the show is the 4-way adjustability. Attached to a slightly curved bar, the XR6 ‘s seat offers a remarkable 20 seat adjustment positions, allowing more proximity or distance from the pedals. And that isn’t all; the reclining design makes room for different tilt adjustments — 5 to be exact! So, no matter your preference, you can find the sitting position that is most comfortable for you. The seat’s adjustability also gives room for versatility; it can accommodate a wide range of user heights. Specifically, people between 5’0-6’5 should have no problem using this seat.
The XR6 is also furnished with Octane’s signature multi-grip converging path handlebars. The handlebars are able to engage the upper body effectively. They also follow the body’s natural motion for an ergonomically correct user-posture. Also, digital contact heart rate sensors are integrated into the handlebars for seamless heart rate monitoring. The XR6 pedals are oversized and have a soft grip texture to accommodate varying foot placements. The pedal design allows for unrestricted forward and backward pedaling— to facilitate extensive muscle engagement. Optional foot straps are included for flexibility and to support upper-body exercises.
XR6 ACCESSORIES AND ASSEMBLY
Let’s face it — workout accessories are a must-have! They make working out far more convenient and comfortable. An elliptical or exercise machine that lacks handy accessories can be a workout damper. But thankfully, the Octane XR6 cross trainer is a well-thought-out exercise machine with a couple of accessories. This includes water bottle holders, a console-integrated tablet holder, and optional foot straps. However, only the XR6xi model has a tablet holder. The tablet holder is integrated into the console and has three placement options — watch, read, and surf.
You can sync the machine with the SmartLink app or with Bluetooth via the tablet — to gain access to the myriad of workout programs and activities that helps you stay motivated, challenged, and goal-oriented. With the placement options, you can maneuver the tablet into a particular angle that best suits your purpose at a time — Whether you are reading, watching videos, or surfing the net. Two large bottle holders are integrated into the rear bar of the XR6’s seat frame. The bottle holders can house different sizes of sports water bottles. Not to mention how convenient it is to reach for them when you need a refreshing beverage or drink.
While the frame of the XR6 cross trainer is shipped pre-assembled, there is still a bunch of parts left to be attached. Quite frankly, you may need to spare about two hours (on average) of your time for the machine’s assembly. You will have to fix the console masts, the console itself, the moving handlebars (left and right) with covers, the top covers, the footrest, the pedals, the mast boot, and the accessory holders. But don’t freak out just yet; a detailed poster manual with clear instructions and illustrations is provided to walk you through the whole process. You will also be needing a #2 Phillips screwdriver, two 13mm wrenches, a 6- and 5-mm hex. However, only the 6 and 5mm hex is included in the box.
WARRANTY, PRICE, AND SHIPPING
A product’s warranty is the measure of its lifespan and the manufacturer’s willingness to account for any defects therein. For the XR6 cross trainer, Octane accords a limited consumer/home use warranty that encompasses a lifetime for the frame, five years for the parts, and a year for labor. The warranty, which is subject to terms and conditions, is rendered effective from the original date of purchase, provided the buyer registers the warranty. A warranty registration card is included in the box for this purpose; by filling the details and returning the card back to Octane fitness, your warranty is registered. Optionally, you can register via Octane’s website at www.octanefitness.com.
As a benevolent gesture, Octane avails you the liberty to transfer your warranty to any individual of your choosing. All you need to do is to complete Octane’s warranty transfer card, and it is done. You should bear in mind that the warranty can only be transferred one-time and nothing more. As a supportive and customer-friendly brand, Octane’s customer support team is always happy to address any questions or concerns you may have. Simply place a toll-free call to 800-726-9662, to state your concerns or issues. Alternatively, you can send them a mail on customerservice@octanefitness.com; you are sure to get a prompt response by the next business day.
The XR6x sells for $3899 while the upgraded console model, XR6xi sells for $4399 — as at the time of this review. So, for $500 more, you can get an advanced console with upgraded features. Octane currently ships the XR6 to the 50 states within the U. S. Note that; residents of Alaska and Hawaii are to pay a quote for freight and Install. The box weighs 291 Ibs on delivery; this means you will need help to unbox and assemble the parts. To be on the safe side, at least two persons should unload and set up the machine. On the bright side, the trainer is easy to move when fully assembled — all thanks to the front-mount wheels. You can assemble it just about anywhere in your home and move it to its designated spot when done.

FINAL VERDICT
The Octane XR6 offers a commendable platform for low-impact workouts that encapsulates combined cardio and resistance training. It is suitable for both beginners and professional athletes. It is especially beneficial for rehabilitation, injury recovery, or post-surgery training. If you are looking for a trainer that will challenge you to the core, the Octane XR6 fits the bill. With a sturdy and stable build, it is relatively ideal for heavy users; it can support a decent maximum weight capacity of 300 Ibs. The sturdy construction also means the trainer can withstand use and “abuse” for a prolonged period of time. Also, Its unique cross-training programs are a delight for your upper and lower body muscles, giving you the chance to work them effectively. Speaking of ergonomics, the Octane XR6 is fantastic — it is quite rare to find a trainer with a natural and wide range of motion. But is this trainer worth its steep price tag? All features considered, the price is a balance between overpriced and justified. For one, it is quite cheap for an Octane elliptical, but it is pricey compared to other recumbent ellipticals on the market. Also, the warranty falls a little short for the price; there are some cheaper models that offer a more generous warranty. If you are watching your budget but want a trainer that is similar in value to the XR6, a more affordable recumbent elliptical like the Proform Hybrid trainer should suffice.
