NordicTrack 9.9 Commercial Elliptical Review

NordicTrack Commercial 9.9 Elliptical Review

NordicTrack 9.9 Overview

“Out with the old in with the new” is the phrase that perfectly matches the advent of the NordicTrack 9.9 commercial elliptical trainer. The modified elliptical ousted and replaced the fan-favourite NordicTrack 9.5 commercial trainer. The decision to discontinue the older model and launch the newer model has significantly improved the serviceability of the commercial exercise machine. Using the 9.9 trainer is like using a “gourmet version” of the outdated 9.5 elliptical trainer ─ it is the same machine but with a couple of advanced features. While the primary features such as the 20% power incline and the 7 inch HD touchscreen remain the same, there are some noticeable changes.

For starters, the 9.9 has a more refined and streamlined console, through the size is still an average 7 inches. What we didn’t see coming was a lighter flywheel. For a remodelled elliptical trainer, it is natural to expect upgraded features or the same untouched components, instead, NordicTrack decided to defy the norm by shaving some pounds off the flywheel. Rather than maintain or improve the 30-pound flywheel on the 9.5 elliptical trainer, the company lowered the 9.9 elliptical’s flywheel to 25 pounds. This is presumed to serve the interests of entry and mid-level users (experienced athletes may have to look elsewhere or make do). The shocking change to the size of the flywheel places it on the lighter end of the spectrum. Nonetheless, it is just as efficient and smooth-sailing as any.

In contrast to the other two models (12.9 elliptical and 14.9 elliptical) in the NordicTrack commercial elliptical series, the 9.9 elliptical trainer appears basic. But basic doesn’t always mean inapt; the 9.9 trainer comes with desirable features that enhance user-experience and exercise quality. Users can take advantage of iFit training via the full-colour 7 inches HD console. Not forgetting the slew of workout programs that add flavour to a monotonous workout routine. And there is the 20% incline coupled with 22 digital resistance levels for an invigorating workout adventure. Plus, you can customize your stride with the adjustable stride and pedals to target specific muscles. These and many other features are what make the NordicTrack commercial elliptical machine a delight to own and workout with. Read along as we detail the virtues and vices of the trainer in this in-depth NordicTrack 9.9 commercial elliptical review.

NORDICTRACK ELLIPTICAL 9.9 REVIEW AND SPECS:

The NordicTrack 9.9 elliptical trainer is built to commercial standards; hence it is pretty solid exercise equipment. The frame is made out of high-quality steel with supporting steel cross beams and oversized levellers to stabilize the machine. Powder-coated rails support and protect the handrails and console while the ramp is made of composite material for improved durability and strength. These add up to a decent 350-pound maximum user weight capacity. The 9.9 elliptical trainer is designed to comfortably house users within the 350-pound weight range with little to no consequences to both the machine and the users.

The 9.9 elliptical sports a front-drive design that is relatively compact than a rear-drive elliptical trainer and is easy to mount and dismount. As opposed to assuming a straight posture on a rear-drive machine, the front-drive configuration imposes a lean-forward stance. This places less pressure on the hip joints, so you are less sore and achy after a workout session. Its average footprint is 68.25 inches long, 28.75 inches wide and 68.5 inches high. The step-on height is a bit high so that you may need about 11inches clearance for an 84 inches tall ceiling. The 25-pound flywheel is considerably heavy and delivers a smooth and stable ride without the annoying jerky movements that come with cheaper elliptical trainers. While the flywheel is not as heavy as that of the other models in the NordicTrack series, it still gets the job done.

Getting the machine started entails connecting the power cord (that has a grounding pin) to a grounded outlet. The outlet must be a nominal 120-volt circuit that is properly installed and grounded per local codes and ordinances. Grounding is imperative to reduce the incidence of electric shock when the machine malfunctions. If a grounded outlet is not available, an adapter can be used to connect the power cord to a grounded 2-pole receptacle. The adapter should only be used temporarily pending the installation of a grounded outlet by a certified electrician. The 9.9 trainer weighs about 244Ibs (in-box), which is pretty heavy. However, the front-mounted transport wheels under the frame of the machine make the weight relatively easy to handle. In other news, the 9.9 trainer does not fold nor fold-up to conserve storage space.

NORDICTRACK 9.9 MONITOR

One of the defining features of the NordicTrack 9.9 commercial elliptical is its full-colour, 7-inch HD SmartScreen console. By sliding or flicking your fingers against the screen, your workout stats will stare you back in the face ─ in vivid colour. The intellectually designed console presents an array of workout programs that make workouts pleasurable and productive. Bluetooth compatibility with a chest strap device takes cardio training to the next level. The console is also equipped with wireless technology that allows for iFit connectivity. iFit coach, NordicTrack’s signature workout streaming service, is the star-feature of the 9.9 console.

With iFit, you can explore an expansive library of empowering workouts designed to get you closer to your fitness goals. It is an exciting realm of studio sessions, global activities and cross-training options including yoga and total-body sculpting. Guided by world-class trainers, you are sure to have the best fitness experience. The iFit trainers, through a live-interactive platform, motivate and push you to work harder. They live –control your resistance and incline, so you follow along and get the most out of your training session.

The beauty of iFit is limitless. For one, you can beat boredom by capitalizing on the different and exciting workouts that pop up daily. These programs range from cardio and fat-burning to muscle toning and endurance training. You can also track your real-time performance stats to see where you have improved and where you need to improve. And you will find the idea of globe-trotting via Google Maps workouts innately pleasing. Plus, iFit coach takes your training beyond the machine; it also offers personalized exercise-related lifestyle coaching, nutritional tips and maps out a healthy sleeping pattern for you. And here is the best part yet; NordicTrack offers a 1-year free iFit membership with up to four user profiles so you can test the waters!

NORDICTRACK 9.9 STRIDE AND INCLINE

Ergonomically engineered, the 9.9 elliptical trainer has an adjustable stride length of 17.5-18.7 inches. The ability to decrease the stride length to about 18 inches for people with a shorter gait is commendable. That aside, users can modify the stride to suit the pace they are most comfortable with. But here is the thing; the stride isn’t “adjustable” in the real sense of the word. The stride moves in tandem with the incline, and it doesn’t adapt to your moves or position. It only changes when you change the slope.

No doubt, the 9.9 commercial elliptical is the exercise machine for fitness enthusiast looking for a body-kicking challenge. This is attributed to the intense 20 incline levels. You can set the incline from 0-20 degrees to change the slope of the elliptical pathway. The multi-incline levels ensure that specific muscle groups don’t go unnoticed while you workout. The higher you go, the more it targets diverse muscle groups. Being power-adjustable, you can control the incline settings from the console instead of manually adjusting it.

With a silent magnetic resistance system, workouts on the 9.9 elliptical are super quiet. This comes in handy if you live with picky neighbours or you have members in your fitness studio who take a disliking to noise and distractions. Magnetic resistance with a high-quality belt drive also means it is easy to maintain. Concerning the tension settings, the 9.9 trainer has 24 digital resistance levels that provide a decent challenge. Like the incline, you can adjust the resistance settings from the console. IFit trainers can also control both resistance ad incline.

NORDICTRACK 9.9 HANDLEBAR AND PEDALS

The features on the 9.9 elliptical trainer keep getting interesting, as shown by the handlebar articulation. The elliptical is furnished with curved, multi-position handlebars that are a rarity on NordicTrack ellipticals. The mobile arms allow users to switch between grips in different positions for custom fit and convenience. This means you can grasp the grips in multiple ways to suit your arm length or the type of exercise you are doing.

And it keeps getting better; the machine also has stationary handlebars with pulse grips for heart rate tracking. The handles have EKG sensors that transmit your pulse to the monitor, which displays it on the screen. When you grasp the grips such that your palm touches the sensors, the console will automatically display your pulse reading. Coupled with the chest strap device, your pulse reading will never be more accurate.

Foot comfort is redefined with the 9.9 adjustable foot pedals. You can choose from three different toe-heel angles to find the perfect fit for your shoes. The pedals are also cushioned and oversized for added comfort and shoe-variety. Additionally, they are slip and skid-proof.

9.9 ELLIPTICAL ACCESSORIES AND ASSEMBLY

An Autobreeze fan is nestled in the console area to combat hot temperature. You don’t have to buy an extra fan or fit the machine under the air conditioning to control ambient temperature. Additionally, the fan is programmed with multi-speed options so you can regulate the amount of airflow that is being emitted. In all honesty, the inclusion of a workout fan is super cool. Gone are the days when mobile devices had no place on an exercise machine. Following the trend, the 9.9 commercial elliptical trainer features a media shelf that stores tablets/phones. Hence, you can enjoy hands-free workout entertainment from your mobile device without any hassle.

The trainer also comes with a water bottle holder for proper workout hydration. The water bottle holder is conveniently placed, so you can easily reach for it when the need arises. If you are a fan of music or other auditory entertainment, you will love the machine’s Bluetooth audio capability and its two digitally amplified speakers. You can blast your favourite tunes without a care in the world and get a kick out of your workout. And have we talked about the optional chest heart rate monitor? This gives cardio training a new meaning. Whether you are looking to burn some fat or strengthen your cardiovascular system, the chest strap device is your best friend. It ensures you maintain the right heart rate to actualize your fitness goals.

Putting together the 9.9 elliptical trainers for use isn’t the most straightforward job, but it is easier with the help of two or more people. The machine is quite heavy, and there are a bunch of parts to be installed. For starters, it is best to set up the machine at its designated spot (where it will be used). Elements to be assembled include; the rear stabilizer, front stabilizer, right roller arm, uprights, upper body leg, pedal arm, console cover, accessory tray, upper body arm, front shield cover, right leg outer and inner covers and the right arm front and rear covers. This may seem tasking at first glance, but the detailed and well-illustrated instruction manual simplifies the assembly process. The whole procedure may take up to an hour or more, depending on how “handy” you are. You will need a Phillip screwdriver, two adjustable wrenches and a rubber mallet for the assembly. Having a set of wrenches will make the process easier, as well.

WARRANTY, PRICE AND SHIPPING

Icon Health and fitness offers a limited warranty for the 9.9 elliptical machine, which covers 10 years for the frame of the machine, 2 years for the parts and a year for labour. For an elliptical trainer of this make, the warranty is a little below expectations. However, Icon is confident about the quality of the 9.9 and declares it free of all defects from production to purchase. According to the warranty terms, the warranty extends only to the buyer and is not transferable; thus, you can’t extend the benefits of the warranty to another person or fitness outlet. The warranty is also limited to repairs and replacement, and nothing else. In this vein, all repairs about the product warranty must be authorized by the company (Icon Health and Fitness).

If replacement parts are shipped while the warranty protects the product, you may have to handle the extra charges incurred. If it is an in-home service, you will also have to pay a minimal token as the trip charge. It is also worth mentioning that the warranty does not extend to freight damages, and the company will not be responsible for damages incurred as a result of product mismanagement or costs of removal and installation. Product warranty registration is also obligatory; hence a warranty registration card is included in the product box for this purpose. As an alternative, you can register the warranty on the NordicTrack website, https://my.nordictrack.com. To learn more about the warranty, kindly contact NordicTrack customer support team on 1 -800-862-3348, or email them at fitnessclub@nordictrack.com.

Another similarity between the 9.5 and 9.9 commercial elliptical trainers is the price point, though the latter has a slightly higher price tag. The 9.9 elliptical retails for $1,999, which is reasonably priced; you do get the bang for your buck. NordicTrack takes shipping seriously and provides several shipping services and options. Processing takes about 1-3 business days while shipping takes approximately 7-10 business days. Delivery from your local delivery centre to your address may take another 1-3 business day. Before the COVID 19 era, you get to choose two major delivery options; threshold delivery and in-home assembly. Unfortunately, only the threshold delivery option is currently available.

FINAL VERDICT

There is no dull moment with the NordicTrack 9.9 elliptical trainer. From high-tech interactive training sessions to accessories that maximize workout output, this elliptical trainer is the deal. Users are treated to premium workout experience built on multiple resistance levels, a 20-degree incline range, an automated stride and laudable ergonomics. The 9.9 trainer is designed to please the muscles and the heart, giving you performance results that will leave you proud and satisfied. Constructed with quality and durable materials, the trainer can hold a 350-pound maximum weight range off the ground. Although, for a commercial elliptical trainer, one would expect a little more than the 350-pound maximum weight limit. When it comes to getting value for your money, this trainer delivers. Its high-end features evidence this. However, the objective truth is that this elliptical is more suited to beginners and intermediate users. For people or elite athletes looking for a more significant challenge, the NordicTrack 14.9 elliptical trainer might be a better fit.
