NordicTrack 14.9 Commercial Elliptical Review

NordicTrack Commercial 14.9 Elliptical Review

NordicTrack 14.9 Overview

2020 saw the arrival of a brilliantly updated elliptical machine from NordicTrack. This new generation elliptical is none other than the 14.9 front-drive, commercial elliptical trainer. The cream of the crop of front-drive NordicTrack’s commercial elliptical series, the 14.9 discarded its previous 10-inch screen for a visibility-upgraded14-inch HD SmartScreen. Much like the other models in the front-drive series, the 9.9 and 12.9 ellipticals, the premium model scores winning points for body-friendly ergonomics, ease of use and overall functionality. It has a comfortable and natural feel to it that can rival that of premium elliptical brands. The difference between the three NordicTrack front-drive models is not far and in between. Users benefit from virtually the same quality of workouts with a few differences in the operation mechanism, comfort and convenience features. Compared to the base commercial 9.9 model, the 14.9 has a heavier flywheel and more resistance levels and a bigger console screen.

Compared to its immediate predecessor, the 12.9 elliptical, a bigger console screen is the distinguishing feature that sets them apart. While the mid-tier 12.9 has a 10-inch console, the top-tier 14.9 has a tremendous 14-inch touchscreen console. Nonetheless, all three NordicTrack front-drive models are worth their salt. An upgraded console is not the only quality that the modified trainer has to offer. It also has an impressive spec-sheet that leaves nothing to be desired. As the name implies, this is an elliptical machine that embodies commercial standards. The make and feel of the 12.9 elliptical are equal parts sturdy and smooth. A significantly heavy 32-pound flywheel anchors the drive. The solid flywheel combined with NordicTrack’s signature Silent Magnetic Resistance (SRM) reinforces the natural and smooth motion of the 14.9”s 17.5-18.7 inches stride.

Workouts are designed to suit different intensity and challenge levels with up to 20-degree adjustable power incline and 26 digital resistance levels. The 14.9 elliptical trainer is not short of the “extras”; it has an iPod compatible audio port with two digital speakers to amplify audio entertainment, a water bottle holder for hydration and refreshment, a tablet holder for additional entertainment features and a workout fan to suppress heat. Users also benefit from an optional chest strap for heart rate tracking. And how did we forget the multi-gripped handlebars with pulse sensors! With so many flexible options for stride, incline and resistance, the 14.9 elliptical machine is a treat for multiple users. To figure out if this multi-functional elliptical machine is for you, read our comprehensive NordicTrack 14.9 commercial elliptical review!

NORDICTRACK 14.9 ELLIPTICAL REVIEW AND SPECS:

While looks alone cannot ascertain the quality and durability of an elliptical machine, we might give the 14.9 trainer the benefit of the doubt. The trainer looks like it is made to withstand long-term, power-intensity use. It is quite beefy and immaculate in appearance with not a single scuff or scratch in place. The colour scheme is subtle and simple and will easily complement the interior of just about any home or fitness studio. The 350-pound maximum weight specification indicates that the 14.9 elliptical trainer is constructed to tolerate a heavy work and weight burden ─ which points to its ruggedness and solidity.

Standing at 69-inches high, 67-inches long and 29-inches wide, the 14.9 is not in any way a compact or small machine. As indicated by its footprint, you need to clear out some floor room in your home or gym to accommodate the hefty machine. Be that as it may, it might still be a better space-conscious alternative to a rear-drive trainer. But bear in mind that the trainer does not fold to conserve storage space. The 32-pound flywheel is another spec that maximizes the functionality of the 14.9 elliptical machine. It is often claimed that a heavier flywheel, usually above 20-pounds, delivers a smoother motion (which may or may not apply to all exercise machines). In any case, the 14.9 trainer comes with a powerful 32-pound flywheel, which delivers a smooth and consistent pedalling action.

The 14.9 elliptical is not a cordless machine and requires a power outlet to run. The power requirement for the elliptical as specified by the manufacturers is a nominal 120-volt grounded outlet. The outlet must be grounded to guard against electric shock that may occur when the machine suffers a malfunction. If you don’t have access to a grounded outlet box cover, you can connect the machine’s power cord to a two-pole receptacle via a temporary adapter. However, this method is a quick alternative and not a permanent replacement for a grounded outlet. So you need to consult a qualified electrician to install a grounded outlet for the machine in the absence of one. If you plan to move this machine around frequently, you might want to think twice; it is quite weighty and a tad difficult to handle. Nonetheless, you can count on the front-mounted porting wheels to lessen the relocation burden.

NORDICTRACK 14.9 ELLIPTICAL MONITOR

It is not every day that you will come across a mid-priced premium trainer with a generously-sized touchscreen console. In the past, elliptical machines with a combined large screen, top-spec features and a relatively affordable price point were rare. The 14.9 elliptical is a game-changer in this respect, making it a great and delightful find for shoppers. Its massive 14-inch SmartScreen HD display is something out of this world. Not only is it crystal-clear, but it also has an easy-to-use user interface. If you are familiar with a tablet or smartphone’s workings, using the 14.9 console will be a walk in the park for you. The large screen makes for excellent readability and visibility. You can view your workout statistics and watch videos without straining your eyes.

The 14-inch screen is the conduit to a broad selection of fitness-savvy workout programs, including iFit coach. Like most consoles, the 14.9 console allows you to keep an eye on your workout performance metrics such as calorie consumption, speed, distance travelled, elapsed time, cadence (RPM), incline, resistance, heart rate and the like. There are also about 35 engaging and performance-enhancing workout programs curated by fitness experts to keep you at the top of your “fitness” game. These programs are transmitted in high-definition interactive videos that will leave you wanting for more. The programs also target different fitness aspects such as cardio, fat burn, endurance building, muscle toning, etc.

Imagine working out with a virtual personal trainer who encourages you to reach for the stars and ace all your fitness goals. Imagine cycling through scenic routes and exploring the beauty of the world through fitness binoculars. Or what if you had a guide who leads you on the path to healthy eating, maps out a personalized exercise routine for you and helps to improve your sleeping habits? With NordicTrack’s trademark iFit coach, these will be your reality. And tell you what; the 14.9 elliptical machine comes with this groundbreaking fitness feature. The machine pairs seamlessly with iFit coach, giving you a repertoire of fitness benefits as outlined above. With iFit, you can work out with acclaimed fitness instructors, tour the most beautiful places in the world via Google Maps and live a healthier life. And isn’t it amazing that this fitness-dedicated app comes free for the first 12 months!

NORDICTRACK 14.9 STRIDE AND INCLINE

The 14.9’s drive system is packed with performance-optimizing features such as a 17.5-18.7 inches motorized stride, a 0-20 degrees power-adjustable incline range and 26 digital resistance levels. The multi-adjustability is proof that the elliptical is customizable to meet user-preference. First, the silent magnetic resistance system is music to the ears, a quiet and serene one. Magnetic resistance means the trainer emits minimal noise output, which is preferred in residential settings. You can work out quietly without constituting a nuisance to your neighbours, housemates, or family members. With the adjustable ergonomically constructed elliptical path, quiet drive system and the inertia enhanced flywheel, running action is fluid and pleasurable from start to finish.

In terms of adjustability, the incline and stride of the 14.9 elliptical are synchronized—the stride length changes with the incline. As you switch from flatter to a steeper slope, the stride transcends a longer to a shorter path. Changes in stride length are beneficial to users who want to find the perfect-fitting gait, while the incline adjustability allows for more muscle inclusion; you can target and work on muscles that are often neglected during regular exercises. Ultimately, the elliptical path can board users of varying gaits, and the incline can target a broad range of muscles while mimicking steep terrains.

When it comes to resistance, more is usually better. On this note, it is safe to say that the 14.9’s 26 digital resistance levels are quite sufficient. Resistance is synonymous to exercise intensity, so the higher the resistance, the higher the exercise intensity and the more the challenge. The fact that the resistance is adjustable is a welcome thought. This means you have the final say as to how intense you want your training to be. Whether you prefer to take it slow, moderate or fast, the resistance control is your willing guest. You can change the resistance and incline via the one-touch controls on the console or through the integrated resistance and incline controls on the handlebar.

NORDICTRACK 14.9 HANDLEBAR AND PEDALS

There are two sets of handlebars on the 14.9 elliptical trainer; static and moving handlebars. The moving handlebars have several cushioned grip positions that allow for multiple muscle conditioning. You can target different muscles by switching grips. The multi-grip design also promotes customization; you can change grips to suit your hand and arm’s length and comfort.

The static handlebars hone in on the lower body’s muscles, helping you work them thoroughly. They are also furnished with dual CardioGrip heart rate monitoring sensors to enhance cardio training. When you grip the handles, the sensors automatically read your pulse and convey the data to the console, from where you can view it on the screen. The sensors are best used with a chest strap device for optimum results.

The oversized foot pedals are also adjustable and comfortable. The space between the pedals (Q-factor) is relatively narrow. This ensures proper body alignment from head to toe. With three-angle foot settings, you can adjust the pedals to conform to your shoe size. And rest assured, you won’t lose your footing on the pedals when your feet become sweaty and sticky ─ they are slip and sweat resistant!

NORDICTRACK 14.9 ACCESSORIES AND ASSEMBLY

As you’d expect, the NordicTrack 14.9 comes with several additional components that boost workout quality and experience. These fixtures include a workout fan, Bluetooth wireless dual speakers, Bluetooth wireless heart rate receiver, a water bottle holder and a tablet holder. The inclusion of a workout fan couldn’t have been more reflective, given that the machine is made for high-intensity exercises, prone to stimulating body sweat. With the fan, exercisers will no longer feel uncomfortable when performing drilling exercises. You can work out your choice of music and tunes with the built-in speakers and the audio port. Connect your headphone or iPod to the machine and blast the music.

With some exercise machines, you have to buy a wireless chest strap separately, but this is not the case with the 14.9 elliptical machines. NordicTrack includes a free chest strap, which saves you money and fosters heart rate measurements for cardio exercises. Before exercise, you can store water or any liquid of your choice in a bottle and strap it to the water bottle holder. So when you need a refreshing drink, you can reach for it without cutting your exercise short. An adjustable tablet holder is also attached to the console to aid workout entertainment and online performance training.

Of course, you have to assemble the 14.9 elliptical upon arrival. However, the 14.9 assembly is not too complicated, and the trainer comes partially assembled as well. Besides, a step-by-step guide with elaborate illustrations is provided to ease the process. Left and right parts to be installed are also properly labelled to eliminate confusion. The package comes with a hardware pack containing some tools and grease; some parts like the axle require greasing before attachment. Elements to be assembled include the rear and front stabilizers, right roller arm, uprights, straight upper body legs, right pedal arm, pedal arm axle, rear console cover, accessory tray, shield covers, and the tablet holder. Avoid pinching wires when fixing the parts. Make sure to tighten all screws and bolts properly. The whole process may take about an hour or thereabout.

NORDICTRACK 14.9 WARRANTY, PRICE AND SHIPPING

The NordicTrack 14.9 commercial elliptical trainer offers 10-year warranty coverage for the machine’s frame, 2-year coverage for the parts, and labour gets a year. FINAL VERDICT

For exercisers who adore an elliptical machine with a massive screen, the NordicTrack 14.9 elliptical machine is a wish come true. Screen aside, this trainer brings a ton of compelling specs to the table. From the solid 32-pound flywheel to the comprehensive workout programs, the 14.9 elliptical is an all-around fantastic exercise machine from the quiet motor to the extensive incline and resistance levels. Not only is it well constructed, but it is also a stable machine that is immune to jerky and wobbly motions. Hence, its 350-pound maximum weight specification is entirely justified. Trainees of all fitness levels can use this machine seamlessly. The adjustable and large-scale resistance and incline range gives room for growth (in the case of beginners) and intense challenges (for professional athletes). However, the stride length might be insufficient for very tall users. That and the somewhat limited warranty aside, the 14.9 elliptical trainer is as good as they come. But is it worth spending $1999 on? Absolutely! But if you have no need for a monster-screen and would love to save a pretty penny, consider the NordicTrack 12.9 elliptical machine.
